Bareboat Charter in Croatia: Licence, Deposit and What You Actually Need (2026)

Croatia is Europe's biggest bareboat market, but you can't take the keys without the right licence and a VHF certificate.

Croatia is the busiest bareboat cruising ground in Europe, and the easiest place in the Mediterranean to charter your own boat. The coast is sheltered, the islands are close together, and the charter fleet is enormous.

It is also a country that checks your paperwork. Croatian port authorities have a formal legal framework, and charter companies are obliged to verify your documents before they hand over the keys. Turn up without the right certificate and the handover stops, whatever you have paid. So before the fun part, here is exactly what you need.

Who can skipper a bareboat in Croatia

You need a recognised sailing licence. Croatia accepts a wide range of them, which is part of why it is such a popular bareboat destination: it does not force you to convert to a local ticket first.

Accepted certificates include:

  • The International Certificate of Competence (ICC)

  • RYA certificates, recognised directly by Croatian port authorities: Day Skipper and above (Coastal Skipper, Yachtmaster)

  • IYT and PCOC certificates

  • The Croatian Voditelj brodice (category B) or a national equivalent from your own country

Crewed yachts for every kind of week on the water, from catamarans and sailing yachts to full-size superyachts.

One person on board holds the sailing licence and skippers the boat. It does not have to be the person who booked. The document must be the original; a copy or a photo on your phone is not accepted at check-in.

The VHF certificate, the one people forget

This is the requirement that catches people out. Alongside the sailing licence, someone on board must hold a separate VHF Short Range Certificate (SRC), sometimes called a marine radio operator's certificate. The RYA SRC, the US FCC Marine Radio Operator permit and equivalent national certificates are all accepted.

It is a different certificate from your sailing licence, and it too must be the original. Every year charterers arrive with a valid skipper's ticket and no VHF certificate and find themselves stuck at the base. Check it well before you travel.

If nobody in your group is qualified

No licence, or no VHF certificate, and you are not out of luck. You hire a professional skipper for the week and charter the same boat as a bareboat with skipper. You can add a hostess too. It is a different product with a different feel, and we have written up exactly how it compares in bareboat vs crewed yacht charter. Frontier arranges both bareboat and bareboat-with-skipper charters when that is the right call for your week.

The security deposit

Every bareboat in Croatia carries a refundable security deposit, blocked on a credit card at check-in and released seven to fourteen days after you return the boat undamaged. Expect €1,000 to €5,000 depending on the size and value of the yacht.

You have two ways to reduce the exposure:

  • The operator's damage waiver (often a CDW reduction), a non-refundable fee of roughly €150 to €300 per week that lowers or removes the deposit held at the base.

  • Standalone deposit insurance, an independent policy that reimburses you if the operator retains the deposit after damage, covering both justified and unjustified retention.

Which one is the better buy depends on the deposit size, the waiver fee and how often you charter. We break the decision down in full in our bareboat charter insurance guide. For readers who want to arrange cover, Frontier is an Introducer to the specialist charter insurer Pantaenius under a Terms of Business Agreement; they handle all quotes, cover terms and claims directly.

Timing and where you can sail

Croatian bareboats run on a fixed weekly clock. Check-in is Saturday afternoon, usually from 5pm, and disembarkation is the following Saturday morning, because the cleaning team needs the boat ready for the next charter that same day. There is also a mandatory return to the home marina by Friday evening so the operator can run the technical checks overnight.

From the Cyclades to the Caribbean, see the destinations our fleet covers, summer and winter.

Your route is your own, but it is bounded by the operator's cruising area and that Friday return, so one-way charters are not standard on a bareboat. The full mechanics of how a bareboat week is structured, and how it differs from noon-to-noon crewed timing, are in bareboat vs crewed.

What gets checked at handover

Have these ready at the base:

  • Passports for the crew

  • The sailing licence, original

  • The VHF SRC certificate, original

  • The crew list

  • A credit card for the security deposit

The charter company checks the documents before handover, walks the boat with you, and blocks the deposit. Bring the originals and it takes minutes.

What it costs beyond the charter fee

The headline price is the boat. Budget for the running costs on top: fuel, end cleaning, the transit log and a tourist (sojourn) tax, marina fees through the week, and any extras like an outboard upgrade or watersports gear. These vary by operator and are usually either built into the price or added at the base, so confirm the list against your specific booking. If you want a framework for the whole number, our guide to budgeting a charter applies here too.

Where to sail in Croatia

Once the paperwork is sorted, the coast is the reward. Our Croatia charter page has the interactive maps, and the three routes we run are written up day by day: Split and Central Dalmatia, Dubrovnik and South Dalmatia, and Zadar and the Kornati. They are planned for crewed yachts, but the anchorages and the coast are the same water you would sail bareboat.

How Frontier helps

Frontier Yachting brokers crewed charters and arranges bareboat and bareboat-with-skipper charters when that is the right product for a group. We do the legwork on the booking, and for insurance we introduce clients to Pantaenius as an Introducer rather than an insurance intermediary. If you are weighing up a Croatian week, tell us your dates and we will point you at the right boat and the right formula.

If this is your first charter, how a luxury yacht charter works is a good place to start.
